Thumbtack makes money the same way Angi does: contractors pay to receive leads. Thumbtack's verification at signup includes license check against the state board, basic background check on the owner via Checkr (FCRA-regulated, requires consent from the contractor), and identity verification. Thumbtack also surfaces customer reviews from prior Thumbtack jobs.
What Thumbtack does well: surfaces reviews from real customers, runs an FCRA-compliant criminal background check on owners (which Groundcheck does not), and offers a hire guarantee on Thumbtack-booked jobs up to a limited dollar amount.
What Thumbtack does not do: continuously monitor license status, check county court records for lien/judgment patterns, check OSHA citations, detect phoenix-company patterns, or check Secretary of State entity status across multiple states.
Groundcheck (earthmove.io/trust) does the public-records side: license board, Secretary of State, county and federal court records, OSHA, BBB, and phoenix-company cross-reference.
