Groundcheck vs Thumbtack: which one verifies contractors better?

Updated June 2, 2026·Sourced from public records

The short answer

Thumbtack is a lead-matching marketplace that screens contractors at signup for license and basic background check. Groundcheck (earthmove.io/trust) is a public-records verification tool with continuous court, OSHA, and phoenix-detection checks. Use Thumbtack to find, Groundcheck to verify.

Thumbtack makes money the same way Angi does: contractors pay to receive leads. Thumbtack's verification at signup includes license check against the state board, basic background check on the owner via Checkr (FCRA-regulated, requires consent from the contractor), and identity verification. Thumbtack also surfaces customer reviews from prior Thumbtack jobs.

What Thumbtack does well: surfaces reviews from real customers, runs an FCRA-compliant criminal background check on owners (which Groundcheck does not), and offers a hire guarantee on Thumbtack-booked jobs up to a limited dollar amount.

What Thumbtack does not do: continuously monitor license status, check county court records for lien/judgment patterns, check OSHA citations, detect phoenix-company patterns, or check Secretary of State entity status across multiple states.

Groundcheck (earthmove.io/trust) does the public-records side: license board, Secretary of State, county and federal court records, OSHA, BBB, and phoenix-company cross-reference. Groundcheck does NOT check criminal history (that's FCRA-regulated, requires contractor consent, and is not the right tool for contractor verification anyway — the relevant signal is business records, not personal criminal history).

Coverage comparison:

- License at signup: both check. - License ongoing: Thumbtack relies on contractor renewal, Groundcheck checks every search. - Owner criminal background: Thumbtack runs Checkr with consent, Groundcheck does not. - Court records (civil, lien, judgment): Thumbtack does not check, Groundcheck does. - OSHA citations: Thumbtack does not check, Groundcheck does. - Phoenix detection: Thumbtack does not detect, Groundcheck does. - Customer reviews: Thumbtack has them, Groundcheck does not. - Hire guarantee: Thumbtack offers limited coverage, Groundcheck does not (Groundcheck is verification, not insurance).

The right workflow: find contractors on Thumbtack (or Angi, HomeAdvisor, Houzz, neighborhood referrals), then run each one through Groundcheck before signing. The two tools answer different questions. Thumbtack asks "can this contractor receive my lead?" Groundcheck asks "does this contractor have a public-records pattern I should worry about?"

Caveat: Groundcheck does NOT verify insurance certificates or references. For project-critical insurance verification, call the insurer directly. For reference checks, talk to two or three of the contractor's recent customers — references from work the contractor self-selected.
